Communicating acceptable alternatives for applicants with non-accredited education

Classification: Health

Regulatory Body

College of OPTICIANS of Ontario

College of OPTICIANS of Ontario

Description

This practice offers a visual map of pathways to registration for international applicants or domestic graduates of non-accredited programs.

On its website, the College of Opticians of Ontario (COO) has posted a flow chart that sets out four possible pathways based on the outcome of the initial application and credential review:

  • credentials sufficient

  • credentials partly sufficient

  • credentials not sufficient, or

  • credentials unavailable due to extraordinary circumstances.

Applicants can readily identify the options available to them in each of these circumstances. They include options for providing a statutory declaration in lieu of credentials and for completing a prior learning assessment and bridging prior to writing the registration examination.

The flowchart also communicates the points at which applicants have access to an appeal process to contest decisions.

This kind of flowchart increases the transparency of the process, clarifies complex information and reduces the potential for confusion and frustration.
