Association of Professional GEOSCIENTISTS of Ontario

This practice allows applicants to better understand how their academic qualifications will be assessed and the requirements they must meet.

The Association of Professional Geoscientists of Ontario (APGO) has posted a comprehensive document detailing minimum knowledge requirements. The document includes a table that lists required courses and acceptable electives for each of the profession's three broad streams of specialization: geology, environmental geoscience and geophysics. The document also defines the number of classroom hours required per course and the required breakdown between first- and upper-year courses.

This creates a high degree of transparency, allowing applicants to clearly understand the standard to which they will be held during the qualification assessment process. The table format allows prospective applicants to easily self-assess before they apply and to identify subject areas where they may need to take additional university courses in order to meet the minimum knowledge requirements. They may also insert course numbers into the appropriate sections of the table to explain how they meet all minimum knowledge requirements and to request consideration of courses which are related to geoscience but not listed among the required courses and acceptable electives.

There is currently no accreditation process for geoscience programs in Ontario. Therefore, this information is helpful to domestic students in choosing courses, as well as to internationally trained applicants seeking to understand whether they are eligible for licensing.
