This practice will be of interest to regulators seeking to standardize their approach to documentation requirements and ensure greater consistency in the format and quality of documents received.

In its application package, the College of Optometrists of Ontario (COO) includes a checklist of required documentation and two tables that offer additional detail about:

  • when and how each document should be submitted

  • acceptable variations to the standard documentation requirement.

The first table specifies, for example, which of the required documents must be notarized and how long a police report or certificate of standing will be considered valid.

The second table clearly outlines acceptable variations. For example, it notes that the College may agree in exceptional circumstances to accept notarized copies of diploma(s) and degree(s) from applicants who are unable to present official transcripts.
