Using evidence-based needs assessment for training

College of DENTAL HYGIENISTS of Ontario

College of DENTAL HYGIENISTS of Ontario

This practice may interest regulators who are exploring ways to determine the training needs of their assessors.

The College of Dental Hygienists of Ontario (CDHO) has a process to monitor the training needs of its clinical competency evaluators.

It keeps statistics on the pass/fail rate of each evaluator to monitor inconsistencies and deviations from the overall group. The CDHO uses these statistics to decide whether an assessor is well trained.

A more senior staff member reviews the evaluator's pass/fail rate to find out whether an evaluator is passing or failing more or fewer individuals on their clinical competency evaluations than the statistical average. Based on the results of this review, CDHO identifies whether the evaluator needs more training.

In addition, CDHO reviews statistical trends to see if evaluator training is appropriate and adequate or whether further training is needed.
