Description

This practice may be of interest to regulators who wish to use a comprehensive approach to staff and decision-maker training.

Through its Council Education Policy, the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario (CPO) commits to equipping council members with necessary skills and knowledge and invests annually in specific education initiatives.

The Executive Committee of the Council has a needs-based strategy for training for each committee. It offers four education sessions annually and provides ongoing education to members of the registration committee and staff members in areas such as: making fair decisions, human rights, differences in cultural backgrounds and ways to identify the potential for biases and decision-writing.

Each year it orients new and existing members. This training includes:

  • role of the committee
  • scope of responsibility
  • good governance, obligations, conduct and consequences
  • public interest
  • conflict of interest
  • confidentiality
  • information on the Canadian Alliance of Physiotherapy Regulators' credentialing and examination services
  • applicant requests for special consideration and the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act.

It has an online portal for members that provides easy access to their training manual, policies, templates and other materials to which they must adhere. The portal includes training sessions for reference.

Th CPO ensures that the training needs of registration staff are documented in orientation and performance evaluation plans. These plans are updated quarterly and reviewed annually. Training materials are circulated and available electronically for reference.

In addition, the CPO monitors the Alliance's efforts to ensure that examiners are qualified to assess applicants. They are carefully chosen and are required to complete a training program before acting as examiners.
