College of MEDICAL RADIATION TECHNOLOGISTS of Ontario

Description

This practice may interest regulators who want to analyze the rationale for their registration requirements. This example deals with language benchmarks.

In 2009, the College of Medical Radiation Technologists of Ontario (CMRTO) completed a research project to analyze its language requirements. Its English Language Proficiency Standards project evaluated the College's language requirements for internationally educated medical radiation technologists.

College members took part in this project. They did an online survey to identify the competencies - skills and knowledge - vital to communicate well in the workplace. Experts in language proficiency assessment later validated these competencies.

The research showed that the level of proficiency CMRTO requires reflects the minimum level required to practise the profession.

As a result of this comprehensive project, the CMRTO increased the number of tests that applicants may use to demonstrate fluency in English. It also set out the minimum scores it will accept.
