Undertaking a "gap analysis"

Classification: Health

Regulatory Body

College of RESPIRATORY THERAPISTS of Ontario

College of RESPIRATORY THERAPISTS of Ontario

Description

This practice concerns ways to identify gaps in internationally educated professionals' competencies and address them.

In 2009, the College of Respiratory Therapists of Ontario (CRTO) completed a "gap analysis" to understand why few internationally educated applicants became registered as respiratory therapists in Ontario.

The study revealed significant knowledge and skills gaps in core (foundation) areas for the majority of internationally educated applicants. It showed that a single bridging program was not a viable option.

As a result, the CRTO developed various pathways to registration.

This practice ensures fairness in the registration and bridging processes and ensures that access to the profession is not limited to any stream of applicant, such as people trained in Ontario.
